PrEP Stigma (AOB) Study

Title:

Understanding and measuring the impact of stigma on PrEP adherence among
adolescent girls and young women in Kenya: identifying targets for future
interventions

*AOB is the Luo acronym for Akwede ok Bwoga (Stigma does not worry me)

Purpose:

To lay the groundwork to develop a stigma reduction intervention by developing a validated PrEP stigma measurement scale, quantitatively measuring PrEP stigma prevalence, and testing the association between stigma and PrEP adherence

Objectives:

  • Develop a scaled instrument to measure multiple forms and sources of PrEP stigma among AGYW who use PrEP and identify candidate intervention approaches
  • Validate a scaled instrument to measure multiple forms and sources of PrEP stigma among AGYW who use PrEP
  • Assess the relationship between stigma and PrEP adherence

Design: 

Mixed methods study including focus group discussions, cognitive interviews, scale pilot testing, and validation, and a quantitative survey with longitudinal follow-up and biological adherence measurements

Population:

Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) aged 15-24 years; peers, partners, and family members of AGYW; and healthcare workers who provide PrEP and other HIV prevention services to AGYW
